The Three S’s of Spring Cleaning

Here’s a quick breakdown of what to send, save and scrap.

As March ushers in Spring, many people will be cleaning out their basements, attics and storage containers. A great way to repurpose your belongings is to donate them to a Salvation Army thrift store. But not everything should be donated. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to send, save and scrap.

Send

  • Gently used clothing, shoes and accessories
  • Small working appliances
  • Kitchenware
  • Linens
  • Toys and children’s items
  • Tools and hardware
  • Furniture
  • Small household items
  • Books, media and games

Save

  • Important personal documents or financial and tax records (be sure to check drawers of donated furniture)
  • Old tube televisions
  • Sentimental or irreplaceable items

Scrap

  • Anything broken or dirty
  • Hazardous or regulated materials (like pressurized tanks)
  • Recalled or outdated baby items
  • Used personal items (such as undergarments)
  • Medical devices requiring a prescription
  • Used mattresses
  • Food or perishables (save that for the food bank!)
